Source: Pet Battle. The bond between yak and rat is a strange one, and what the rat gains out of the symbiotic relationship is a mystery. Critter type. If you search for "Dread Wastes" in your pet journal the Yakrat shows up. Don't bother looking for these in Dread Wastes.
The Yakrat is a wild pet from the Pandaria expansion that appears as a secondary or tertiary pet during battles in Townlong Steppes, despite the in-game Pet Journal incorrectly suggesting it can be found in Dread Wastes.

Skip Dread Wastes Entirely
Although searching 'Dread Wastes' in the Pet Journal surfaces the Yakrat, the pet does not actually spawn there. Head to Townlong Steppes instead.
Battle Pets at Gao-Ran Battlefront
The Yakrat appears randomly as a secondary or tertiary pet in almost any pet battle fought in Townlong Steppes. Gao-Ran Battlefront is a recommended farming spot because pets spawn within the camp itself, minimizing the need to navigate through hostile mobs.
Try Sra'Vess Island Southwest
The small area to the southwest of Sra'Vess, the island on the far west of the Townlong Steppes map, is another reliable location to encounter or farm a rare-quality Yakrat.
Tips
Fire Camp Osul in Townlong Steppes is an alternative farming location if Gao-Ran Battlefront is crowded.
