Hunt Squirrels in Crystalsong Forest
Head to Crystalsong Forest in Northrend for an easy rare Squirrel. When battling any critter there, the secondary battle pet has a high chance of being a level 22 rare Squirrel, with captured stats scaling to Health 1205, Power 208, and Speed 234 at level 20 rare.
Find Squirrels in Terokkar Forest
Squirrels also spawn in Terokkar Forest near Slymir Lake. Note that these critters come with strong abilities at level 18 and can quickly defeat undead rare pets.
Farm Rare Squirrels in Feralas
Feralas has an abnormally high chance for rare Squirrels appearing as secondary pets, with roughly 3 rare Squirrels encountered as secondaries within around 30 to 35 fights.
Craft via Mechanical Squirrel Box
A mechanical variant can be obtained via the 
Mechanical Squirrel Box, which is also available on the Auction House from other players.
Tips
Squirrels that appear as secondary pets in Crystalsong Forest tend to be level 22, which is higher than the zone's primary pets.
Undead rare pets are at a disadvantage against level 18+ Terokkar Forest Squirrels due to their strong abilities.
