Try the Dungeon Method
Enter Operation: Mechagon and check the coast near Rustbolt at 79, 37. A Yellow Junkhopper can spawn on the beach there — use a /tar Yellow Junkhopper macro as soon as the dungeon loads to target it immediately, even before the pet icon appears on the minimap. Reset the dungeon repeatedly; players have found one after just 5–6 resets using this method.
Farm Mechagon Island Instead
If you prefer the open world, kill Fleeting Frogs across Mechagon Island to force Yellow Junkhopper spawns. Focus on the western side: there are spawns in a pond at 47.5, 31.5, along the coast at 78.7, 42.3, and near the spider area at 85, 32. Additional confirmed spawn locations include 34.6, 81.8, 79.5, 37.6, 78.73, 41.89, 85.5, 32.5, and 34.57, 81.48. Kill both battle pet and critter Fleeting Frogs — this can take upward of 3 hours of continuous farming.
Watch for Feign Death
The Yellow Junkhopper has a Feign Death ability, meaning it can appear to die during battle without actually being defeated — do not abandon the fight if this happens, as the pet is still capturable.
Tips
The Yellow Junkhopper is one of three rare counterparts needed for the Mecha-Safari achievement; the others follow the same spawn logic of replacing their common equivalent.
