Travel to Twilight Highlands
Alliance players can fly directly to Kirthaven or Thundermar, where the hatchlings spawn around the gryphon platforms and can be engaged in a pet battle despite being friendly to Alliance characters. Horde players cannot initiate a direct pet battle against them at these locations.
Horde: Fight Secondary Battlers
As a Horde player, engage any wild pet in the Twilight Highlands — such as rattlesnakes or the mole-type creatures — and the Wildhammer Gryphon Hatchling can appear as a secondary enemy pet on the opposing team, allowing you to battle and capture it.
Fix the Kirthaven Basement Bug
One hatchling at Kirthaven can become stuck in a basement and appear unreachable. To interact with it, open the Game Menu, go to Key Bindings, scroll to the Targeting Functions section, and bind a key to 'Interact with Target' — then target the pet and use that keybind to initiate the battle.
Tips
Horde players on a low-level Alliance character can reach Thundermar by taking the flight path to Greenwarden's Grove and hugging the zone edge through Dragonmaw Gates to avoid most hostile NPCs.
The Wildhammer Gryphon Hatchling looks identical to the Blizzard Store gryphon pet but will not fly when you mount up on a flying mount.
