Hunt in Icecrown
Head to Icecrown and search for Scourged Whelplings — Cockroaches frequently spawn alongside them, and rare-quality Cockroaches appear regularly during these hunts. Since these pets are level 23, capturing one here saves significant leveling time.
Check health to confirm rarity
Do not rely on the quality indicator alone — check the Cockroach's health pool relative to its level to confirm it is rare, as a level 15 rare Cockroach should have around 1016 health.
Avoid AoE abilities
Do not use area-of-effect attacks to clear nearby mobs before engaging a Cockroach, as this will kill the pet and remove it from the battle entirely.
Note Cockroach vs. Roach
Cockroach and Roach share the same model but are two separate pets — if you are collecting both, capture one of each since they count individually in your collection.
