Acquisition Guide

The Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent is obtained from Alani the Stormborn, a rare flying serpent in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms who drops the Reins of the Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent upon death.

Farm Skyshards in Vale

Skyshards drop at an extremely low rate of approximately 1 in 1,000 kills from mobs throughout the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. They can also be found in loot bags obtained from the final quest of the Golden Lotus dailies and from rare spawns in the Vale.

Craft the Sky Crystal

Once you have collected 10 Skyshards, combine them to create a Sky Crystal, which is the item used to remove Alani's immunity buff.

Locate Alani the Stormborn

Find Alani the Stormborn at 16.4, 38.0 in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. She is a level 92 rare serpent flying around the zone and carries a buff called Nimbus Shroud that makes her immune to all attacks.

Remove Nimbus Shroud buff

Use the Sky Crystal on Alani at 16.4, 38.0 in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms to remove her Nimbus Shroud immunity buff, allowing you to attack and defeat her.

Defeat Alani for mount

After removing Nimbus Shroud, defeat Alani the Stormborn at 16.4, 38.0 in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. She has a 100% drop rate for the Reins of the Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent. You only need to be Exalted with August Celestials on one character — once you learn the mount on that character, all your other characters only need Exalted to ride it.

Tips

The Sky Crystal and Skyshards are tradeable, meaning you can purchase them from other players on the Auction House to speed up the process.
