How To Strain Your Dragon
Finish first in the Sky Race.
How To Strain Your Dragon is a 10-point achievement earned by finishing first in the Sky Race, available as part of a daily quest that becomes accessible upon reaching Revered reputation.
Unlock The Sky Race
The Sky Race daily quest is only available once you reach Revered reputation. It is not available every day, so abandon and restart the quest to retry as many times as needed on the day it is active.
Skip the Opening Cinematic
Just before Instructor Windblade triggers the opening cinematic, activate auto-run. You will be teleported away but the quest continues, allowing you to fly through the checkpoints on your own mount instead of the provided dragon.
Fly the Checkpoint Route
Navigate the race checkpoints in order across the Jade Forest. The verified checkpoint locations are at 58.78, 46.84 then at 60.46, 52.89 then at 61.84, 54.52 then at 64.07, 51.01 then at 66.81, 51.52 then at 66.1, 42.36 then at 66.34, 35.95 then at 59.72, 31.47 then at 61.33, 25.18 and finally at 60.69, 39.36. Use your map or minimap for an overview of the checkpoint layout.
Use 310% Flying Speed
When flying on your own mount, the speed clouds along the route do not apply their buff. Having 310% flying speed compensates for this and is enough to overtake the Black Serpent Rider, who typically pulls ahead after the first third of the course.
Tips
You only need the daily quest to be active once — keep abandoning and restarting the quest on that same day to retry the race until you finish first.
Take shortcuts on the later checkpoints to save the most time, but slow down slightly near each flag to avoid missing it, as flying past without registering a checkpoint will cost more time than a careful approach.
