Manage Vigor Carefully
Instead of spending vigor almost on cooldown, hold it until you drop below 900 speed, then spend 4-5 charges in rapid succession to sustain maximum speed through the race. Switching to this pacing approach has helped many players go from failing repeatedly to clearing races in one or two attempts.

The Dragon Rider addon includes a meter that fills as you boost forward — keeping it nearly full helps you pace vigor spending throughout each race.
